Budget 2026 Animal Husbandry — New Schemes for Cattle, Buffalo, Goat and Poultry Farmers Explained Simply

Every year when the government announces its Budget, farmers hear big numbers and complicated words on the news but nobody explains what it actually means for the person who wakes up at 4 am to milk his buffalo or feed his goats. This year in Budget 2026, the central government has announced several new schemes specifically for animal farmers people like you who keep cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, poultry or pigs. The good news is that most of these schemes give you real money, free training, subsidised loans and free veterinary support. And the even better news most of it you can apply for sitting right in your village, without going to any office. In this article we will explain every scheme in plain simple language what it is, who can get it, how much money is involved, and exactly how to apply.

What is the Government Actually Offering This Year?

The central government has set aside a much bigger budget for animal farming in 2026 compared to last year. This is not just talk the money is real, the schemes are running, and farmers across India are already benefiting. There are roughly 8 major schemes you need to know about. We will go through each one simply  think of this as a friend explaining it to you over tea, not a government officer reading from a file.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission — For Desi Cow and Bull Farmers

If you keep a desi cow like Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Hariana or Red Sindhi the government wants to help you. Under this scheme you can get financial support for buying quality desi breed animals, free artificial insemination at your doorstep, and training on how to increase milk production naturally. The focus is completely on Indian breeds not foreign Holstein or Jersey cows. If your cow is desi, this scheme is for you.

National Livestock Mission — For Goat, Sheep, Pig and Poultry Farmers

This is one of the most useful schemes for small farmers. If you want to start or expand goat farming, sheep farming, pig farming or poultry — the government gives up to 50% subsidy on your total project cost. That means if setting up your goat unit costs ₹1 lakh, the government pays ₹50,000 and you pay only ₹50,000. You apply through your nearest bank or through the NLM portal online.

Kisan Credit Card for Animal Farmers — Loan Up to ₹5 Lakh

Most farmers think Kisan Credit Card is only for crops. That is wrong. Since 2019 animal farmers can also get KCC loans up to ₹5 lakh at very low interest rates of around 4% per year after government subsidy. You can use this money to buy animals, buy feed, build a small shed or pay for veterinary treatment. Any farmer with animals can apply at their nearest bank with just Aadhaar, land record or animal ownership proof.

Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund — AHIDF

This scheme is for farmers who want to build proper infrastructure: a small dairy processing unit, a cold storage for milk, a feed plant, or a meat processing unit. The government gives loans at subsidised interest rates with a 3% interest subsidy. If you are thinking of growing beyond just keeping animals and want to process and sell your products directly, this fund can help you get started professionally.

Free Vaccination and Disease Control Programme

This one costs you absolutely nothing. The government runs a free vaccination programme for Foot and Mouth Disease, Brucellosis, PPR in goats and sheep, Classical Swine Fever in pigs and Newcastle Disease in poultry. Your nearest government veterinary hospital or mobile veterinary unit will come to your village and vaccinate your animals free of charge. You do not need to apply anywhere just contact your block veterinary officer or call the helpline 1962.

Pashu Kisan Credit Card — Haryana Special

Farmers in Haryana get an additional benefit. The state government runs the Pashu Kisan Credit Card separately which gives ₹60,249 per buffalo, ₹40,783 per cow, ₹4,063 per goat or sheep and ₹720 per pig as interest free working capital. This money comes directly to your account every month and is recovered only when you sell milk or animals. If you are in Haryana this is one of the best schemes available to you right now.

Helpline 1962 — Your Direct Line to Government Help

Remember this number — 1962. This is the national animal husbandry helpline. You can call it free from any phone, any time. They will tell you which scheme you qualify for, connect you to your nearest veterinary officer, guide you on how to apply for subsidies, and even send a vet to your farm in many states. Most farmers do not know this number exists. Now you do.

What Should You Do Right Now — Your Simple Action List

Reading about government schemes is easy. Actually getting the money is where most farmers stop. Do not let that happen to you. Here is what you should do in the next 7 days — one small step each day:

Day 1 — Call 1962 today. Just call. Tell them your state, your animals and your situation. Ask them which scheme suits you best. The call is free and takes 10 minutes. This one call can save you months of confusion.

Day 2 — Collect your documents. You will need these for almost every scheme — Aadhaar card, bank passbook, a photo of your animals, and if possible your land record or animal ownership certificate. Keep photocopies of all ready in one file.

Day 3 — Visit your nearest bank. Go to any nationalised bank — SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda — and ask specifically for the Kisan Credit Card for animal farming. Tell them you have cattle or buffalo or goats. Ask them to show you the KCC animal husbandry form. Do not leave without filling it.

Day 4 — Visit your block veterinary officer. Every block in India has a government veterinary officer. Go and meet them. Tell them your animals and ask specifically — which free vaccinations are due for my animals this season. Get them scheduled for free.

Day 5 — Apply for National Livestock Mission online. Go to nlm.udyamimitra.in on your phone. Select your state, fill in your details and animal type. The subsidy application takes 20 minutes online. If you face any difficulty ask your nearest CSC centre — Common Service Centre — to help you fill it free of charge.

Day 6 — If you are in Haryana. Visit your nearest district animal husbandry office and ask specifically for the Pashu Kisan Credit Card application form. Carry your Aadhaar and passbook. This card puts money directly in your account every month.

Day 7 — Tell one neighbour. The biggest problem with government schemes is that farmers do not know they exist. If this article helped you, forward it to one farmer neighbour on WhatsApp today. That one share might change their life.

Remember — the government has kept this money aside for you. It will not come to your door on its own. You have to take the first step and that first step is as simple as dialling 1962.
